We've joined the 10:10 campaign

24th September 2009

This year, thousands of individuals and organisations from across the country are putting aside their differences to help write the first chapter of 21st Century's biggest story. The idea is simple: we work together to achieve a 10% cut in the UK's carbon emissions in 2010. From village post offices to City skyscrapers, everyone's invited.

Cutting 10% in one year is a bold target, but for most of us it's an achievable one, and is in line with what scientists say we need right now. And by signing up to a 10% target we're not just supporting 10:10 - we're making it happen.

The success of 10:10 depends on getting everyone involved. We need to start spreading the word to every corner of the country, inviting our friends, family, colleagues, customers, competitors - everyone we know - to take part.

It's easy to feel powerless in the face of a huge problem like climate change, but by uniting large numbers of people and institutions around immediate, effective and achievable action, 10:10 enables all of us to make a meaningful difference.

It's the perfect opportunity to find out what's possible when we work together. 10:10 is about putting aside our differences to tackle the defining challenge of our age. 10:10 is about working together and raising our game. Let's get started.

Symposium — 10 Ways to Save Money on the Mainframe

2nd April 2009

The 10 Ways to Save Money on the Mainframe Symposium in the Museum of Science & Industry in Manchester on the 25th March 2009 was very well attended with about 20 delegates from nine UK mainframe sites including many who obtained discounts via their UKCMG & GSE membership

Fabio Massimo Ottaviani from EPV Technologies, a leading guru on mainframe performance and capacity planning, gave a detailed account of 10 main areas where mainframe users can save money. These were illustrated by case studies and user examples throughout. The major point that Fabio made was that, although IBM provides opportunities for companies to reduce their software bills by implementing various new licensing methods, these licensing methods require a sea-change in the culture and methods within IT department to be able to reap the benefits. These changes are predicated on the ability to measure and control the work that runs in zOS. For this reason, he recommended attendees to use software, which automatically provides the required measurements and exceptions at your fingertips, such as EPV for zOS.

Lee Hopkins from HSBC said the Fabio’s presentation was "highly interesting and relevant to our company. Some ideas, we are ready working on, but we certainly will look to take on some of the other ideas put across in the presentation... It was a valuable and worthwhile day".

Horizont User Day 2007

28th September 2007

The fourth biennial Horizont User Day took place on the 26th September 2007.

There was a great turnout for the Horizont User Day last Wednesday with over 40 delegates there, representing 15 different companies with people from as far a field Dublin, Edinburgh, London and Norwich. We hope that you found it a useful and relevant day.

Barclays excelled themselves this year by not only being marvellous hosts, but by also by the user presentation providing a very clear insight into why they use TWS/Audit to help them comply with the Sarbanes/Oxley legislation. Bob Gribben take a bow. We have heard a rumour that Bob has already been invited to repeat the talk at the Tivoli User Group. A star is born.

All the presentations and complete up to date versions of the Horizont software, documentation and information were on the CD given out at the User Day, if anyone needs more copies please get back to us. We will also put the presentations on the website and send you the links.

The usual suspects - Dean Harrison from IBM, Karl Huber, Helmut Ziegler & Radek Svitak from Horizont.
